You should be due a tax rebate if:
-
You have paid Emergency Tax in the last six years
The Emergency Tax code doesn’t take into account your tax free allowance of £540 per month and will apply tax on all of your earnings - even if you earn less than the £540 per month/£6,450 per year allowance. It is common to be placed on an Emergency Tax Code at the start of a new job or if you have several jobs. We can claim back all of your tax overpayments for up to and including the previous 6 tax years.
-
You have worked while studying at college or university
If you have had a part time job whilst studying towards higher education it is likely that you have earned under your tax free allowance of £6,480 and/or been placed on an Emergency Tax Code at some point during your employment.
-
You have recently received an automatic Tax Rebate from HM Revenue & Customs
Many people have recently received a tax rebate or demand from HMRC for the 08/09 and 09/10 tax year due to the discovery of errors in the calculation of tax payments made during this period. Although it is possible to claim back any tax overpayments made within the past six years only tax overpayments made during this period (past 2 years) are being returned automatically. This means that you can still claim back any tax due to you for an additional 4 years! We can claim back all of your tax overpayments for up to and including the previous 6 tax years.
-
You have earned less than the taxable threshold of £6,450 per year and still paid tax in any of the previous 6 tax years
Each year there is a set amount of income which you can earn before you have to start paying income tax. This is known as your Tax Free Allowance and is currently set at £6,475 for the 2009-10 tax year. If you have earned under your tax free allowance for any of the previous 6 tax years and have still paid tax then we can claim back these overpayments for you.
-
You have previously worked in Field Sales or as a Call Centre agent
If you work, or have worked, in an environment where you receive a monthly “bonus” on top of your “basic” weekly wage then your employer will probably have overpaid tax payments on your behalf to the Inland Revenue. If this is the case then we can claim back these overpayments for you from as far back as the previous 6 tax years.
-
You have worked as a member of staff at a concert or event
When you undertake temporary work for a concert or event the staffing/recruitment agency you are employed through will typically be unable to obtain your P45 in time to assign you the correct tax code. This means you are assigned an emergency tax code and will end up making higher contributions than are necessary. If you have been employed as a member of event staff and are also in higher education or part time employment then you will qualify to reclaim all of your tax back because you have not earned over the tax free threshold of £6,450.
-
You are leaving the UK, either permanently or on a gap year
If you have worked in the UK, paid income tax and are now leaving for an extended period of time then you will almost certainly be due a tax rebate. As you are leaving part way through the year then you will not have received the full tax free allowance that you are entitled to.
-
You have recently become unemployed
If you have recently become unemployed then you could be due a tax refund for one of the following reasons:
- You were only employed for part of the tax year
- Your employer was using the wrong tax code
- You’ve returned to studying
- You’ve been unemployed for at least four weeks.
